VL53L7CX Time-of-Flight 8×8-Zone Wide FOV Distance Sensor Carrier (Up to 3.5m)

If you want a “mini lidar” feel without the lidar price/size, this is it. The VL53L7CX is a time-of-flight laser-ranging sensor that can measure absolute distances across a configurable 4×4 or 8×8 grid, so you can build a low-resolution depth map instead of just getting one distance value.

Built-in 3.3V regulator + I²C level shifters let it work from 2.5V–5.5V systems (VIN logic level).

Quick fit notes

  • Wide view: 60°×60° (90° diagonal) — great for “what’s in front of me?” sensing.
  • Minimum range: 20mm; resolution: 1mm.
  • Included headers: 1×8 straight + 1×7 right-angle header strips.
  • Mounting: two holes spaced 0.5″ for #2/M2 screws.
Important: Not recommended for typical 8-bit microcontrollers (the ST API is heavy—often >90KB program memory). If you’re using an 8-bit board, consider simpler single-zone ToF options instead.
Also: some units may ship with a protective liner covering the sensor—remove it for proper sensing.

Why/Benefits

  • Depth-map style sensing: detects distance across multiple zones at once (multi-target per zone supported).
  • Works in real lighting: ToF measurements are independent of ambient light (though max range still depends on target & environment).
  • Easy interfacing: on-board 3.3V regulator + I²C level shifting for VIN logic level (2.5V–5.5V).
  • Compact carrier: 13×18×3mm fits tight robots and enclosures.

Pinout & power notes

  • Minimum required connections: VIN, GND, SCL, SDA.
  • VIN: main supply (3.3V–5.5V typical); also sets I²C logic-high level via the level shifters.
  • VDD: regulated 3.3V output (or can be used as input 2.5V–3.6V to bypass regulator if VIN is disconnected).
  • LPn / I2C_RST / INT: not level-shifted and not 5V-tolerant (plan accordingly).

FAQ

  • Will this work with Arduino UNO (8-bit)?

Not recommended—initialization and processing require significant RAM/code space (ST API often >90KB). Use ESP32/RP2040/Raspberry Pi instead.

  • Does it work at 5V logic?

Yes for I²C (SCL/SDA are level-shifted to VIN), but LPn/I2C_RST/INT are not level-shifted and are not 5V-tolerant.

  • Why is there a VDD pin?

VDD is the regulator’s 3.3V output (and can supply ~100mA for small external devices), or you can power the board through VDD (2.5V–3.6V) with VIN disconnected to bypass the regulator.

  • My readings look “blocked” or weak—what should I check?

Some units ship with a protective liner over the sensor. Remove it for proper sensing performance.
