Pololu VL53L4CD Time-of-Flight Distance Sensor Carrier — 120cm Max, 1mm Resolution, I²C, 2.6–5.5V

Get fast, accurate distance readings with a sensor that feels like a “tiny lidar.” The Pololu VL53L4CD carrier  is a breakout for ST’s VL53L4CD time-of-flight (ToF) laser-ranging sensor, capable of measuring distance from about 1mm up to 1200mm (depending on target and environment) with 1mm resolution and a maximum sampling rate up to 100Hz. Read measurements over I²C, and use the onboard 2.8V regulator + I²C level shifting to interface easily with 3.3V or 5V systems.

  • Absolute distance via ToF: measures how long laser pulses take to return (less affected by ambient light than reflectance-only sensors).
  • Fast updates: configurable timing, with a listed max sampling rate of 100Hz
  • Onboard power + I²C level shifting: runs from 2.6–5.5V; I²C lines shift to the same logic level as VIN
  • Extra pins: shutdown input (XSHUT) and interrupt output (GPIO1) for window/threshold events.
Important notes (to avoid buyer confusion):
  • This product may ship with a protective liner covering the sensor—remove it for proper readings.
  • XSHUT and GPIO1 are not level-shifted and are not 5V-tolerant (they use the sensor’s ~2.8V logic level).
  • Maximum range depends on target reflectivity and conditions; best results come from low ambient light + high-reflectivity targets.

Why/Benefits

Accurate, fast distance sensing
  • 1mm resolution with fast sampling (up to 100Hz)
  • Time-of-flight method gives consistent “absolute distance” behavior
  • Typical full field of view (FoV) around 18°
Easy to integrate
  • Single-supply input: 2.6–5.5V with onboard 2.8V regulation
  • I²C SCL/SDA are level-shifted to match VIN for 3.3V/5V MCUs
  • 0.1" pin spacing for breadboards/perfboards

Pinout & power notes

  • VIN / GND: connect to 2.6–5.5V and common ground.
  • VDD: regulated 2.8V output (or can be used as an input 2.6–3.5V if VIN is disconnected to bypass the regulator).
  • SDA / SCL: level-shifted I²C lines (logic HIGH = VIN).
  • XSHUT: active-low shutdown input (not level-shifted, not 5V-tolerant).
  • GPIO1: interrupt output (VDD logic level; not level-shifted).

FAQ

  • Will it work with 5V Arduino?
Yes for I²C: SDA/SCL are level-shifted to VIN, so you can run it on a 5V I²C bus. Just remember XSHUT/GPIO1 are not level-shifted (2.8V logic).
  • Why is my sensor “not reading” after unboxing?
Check for a protective liner on the sensor package and remove it.
  • Can I use the interrupt for presence detection?
Yes—GPIO1 can be configured to trigger based on distance thresholds/windows.
