Reliable Conductive Thread for Wearables and E-Textile Projects

The Stainless Medium Conductive Thread - 3 ply - 18 meter / 60 ft is a practical choice for sewing electrical connections into fabric-based electronics. Made from 316L stainless steel, this conductive thread is strong, smooth, and built for wearable projects where you need a flexible sewing-friendly conductor instead of standard wire.

This 3-ply medium thread is thicker than ordinary cotton or polyester thread, but still workable for hand sewing with a medium-eye needle. It is a great fit for soft circuits, sewable LEDs, textile sensors, and wearable prototypes where durability matters.

Important: This thread has a resistance of about 10 ohms per foot, so it works best for low-current wearable and e-textile applications, generally under 100mA.

Why you'll love it

  • Made from 316L stainless steel: Durable and corrosion resistant
  • 3-ply medium thickness: A good balance of strength and sewability
  • Wearable-project friendly: Great for e-textiles, soft circuits, and sewable electronics
  • Wash-safe material: Better long-term reliability than silver-based thread that can oxidize
  • Smooth and strong: Well suited for repeated stitching and practical use
  • Long spool: Includes 18 meters / 60 feet of thread for multiple builds

What you can build

This conductive thread is ideal for sewable LED projects, wearable sensors, textile switches, interactive costumes, soft robotics, educational e-textile projects, and fabric-based prototypes using boards like FLORA, GEMMA, or other sewable electronics.

Starter bundles

Pair it with sewable microcontroller boards, sewable LEDs, needles, and fabric or garments for a complete wearable electronics starter setup.

Recommended add-ons

Useful extras include multimeters for continuity testing, alligator clips for prototyping, snaps or conductive fasteners, and standard non-conductive thread for structural sewing.

Sewing & usage notes

This thread is strong and smooth enough for hand sewing with medium-eye needles, and it may also work with sewing machines that can handle heavier thread. Because it is stainless steel, it is more durable for long-term wearable use and less prone to oxidation-related failure.

It does feel a bit stiffer than ordinary thread, closer to waxed thread, so it is not the best option for touchscreen glove fingertips or very soft fabric applications that need extra flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this used for? It is used to sew electrical connections into fabric for wearable electronics, e-textiles, and soft circuit projects.
Can it be used for LEDs and small electronics? Yes. Its resistance is low enough for many low-current components such as sewable LEDs and similar wearable electronics parts.
Is it safe to wash? Yes. Since it is made from stainless steel fibers, it is suitable for washable wearable projects when the rest of the build is also designed for washing.
Does it tarnish like silver conductive thread? No. One of its advantages is better oxidation resistance compared with silver-based thread.
Is this good for touchscreen gloves? Not really. It is a bit stiff, so thinner conductive yarn is usually a better choice for glove fingertips.
