Types of Frequency Generators

Frequency generators come in a variety of forms with a range of uses. In general, no instrument can be used for every feasible application.

Audio Frequency Generator

One type of frequency generator, an activated signal generator, is the audio frequency generator. A modulated audio frequency signal emerges from the circuit's output whenever a positive pulse is applied to the input. This circuit's signal pattern is similar to a bird's chirp. The activation signal's pulse width must be one millisecond. The voltage supply ranges from 9 to 20 volts. The audio frequency generator uses no more than 2mA of current. The C1 capacitor can be changed to a 0.1UF capacitor to convert this circuit into a Morse code signal generator.

Digital Frequency Generator

The digital components of a digital frequency generator include an adder, a shift register, a 1M bit EPROM, and a latch. The shift register reduces the number of port pins required from 33 to 3 at the microcontroller unit. Additionally, it synchronizes the adder action with the data supplied from the microcontroller unit.

Through the latch, the adder's output is connected to itself as feedback. As a result, at each CLK cycle, the output value of the latch is enhanced by the value of the shift register. Additionally, the register's value serves as an EPROM address. This EPROM includes a table that allows the value of the latch and the amplitude of the o/p signal to be changed. Every waveform is theoretically capable of being stored and then generated.

The precision of the oscillator determines the precision of the frequency produced at low frequencies, while the jitter—caused by the independent nature of the adder and table—determines the precision of the frequency produced at high frequencies. The MCU's DDS software serves as the foundation for amplitude modulation and frequency modulation. Because the sinus is read from a 16K byte data structure starting at H01000 (Least Significant Bit first), you can replace it with any other type of waveform.
