Pololu Big Pushbutton Power Switch (HP) — Latching Soft Power + Reverse Voltage Protection (4.5–40V)

Upgrade from bulky mechanical switches to a compact solid-state “soft power” switch. The Pololu Big Pushbutton Power Switch (HP) lets you use a momentary pushbutton to control your main DC power: press once to turn ON, press again to turn OFF. Since the load current flows through MOSFETs (not the button), you can use small, low-power tactile switches while still switching high current. Built-in reverse-voltage protection helps protect your project if the battery is connected backwards.

  • Push-on / push-off latching control: momentary button toggles the power state.
  • Reverse-voltage protection: helps prevent damage from reversed battery wiring.
  • High-current capable (HP version): designed for demanding loads and robot drivetrains.
  • Multiple control options: use ON, OFF, and CTRL pins for MCU control and auto-shutdown.
  • Multiple buttons: wire several momentary switches in parallel to control power from multiple locations.
Important safety note:
  • Not an emergency cutoff: do not use as a safety disconnect where failure to cut power could cause injury or property damage.
  • DC only: this is a DC power switch and does not provide complete isolation in the OFF state.
  • One-direction switching: power applied to VOUT cannot be switched to VIN.

Why/Benefits

Cleaner power control for projects
  • Small pushbuttons can control large current (current doesn’t flow through the button)
  • Less “switch bounce” issues vs traditional latching switches
  • Great for battery devices that need a neat pushbutton interface
More than a simple switch
  • Self-shutoff: device can pull OFF to turn itself off (useful for low-battery protection)
  • Digital control: MCU can command ON/OFF using ON or CTRL
  • Convenient redundant pads and big power pads (compatible with 5mm terminal blocks)

Pinout & power notes

  • A & B: connect a momentary switch between A and B for normal toggle behavior (push-on / push-off).
  • ON: a high pulse (>1V) turns the switch ON.
  • OFF: a high pulse (>1V) turns the switch OFF (lets your load shut itself down).
  • CTRL: direct control of state (high = ON, low = OFF). Leave floating if unused.
  • Tip: For motors/inductive loads, keep power wires short and consider capacitors + TVS/diodes to reduce voltage spikes.

FAQ

  • Can I use multiple pushbuttons?
Yes. You can wire multiple momentary switches in parallel so any button can toggle the power.
  • Can my microcontroller turn the power off automatically?
Yes. Use the OFF input to let the device shut off its own power (handy for low-battery cutoffs).
  • Is this a safety disconnect / emergency stop?
No. It’s not intended as an emergency cutoff or safety disconnect.
  • What voltage should I use?
Use within the recommended 4.5–32V range. Test carefully near the high end of the range for reliable switching behavior.
