DC Motor Driver Thumbnail Sized 2 x 1.5A HR8833

DC Motor Driver Thumbnail Sized 2 x 1.5A HR8833 - This is a ultra compact size Dual-H-Bridge dc motor driver (Based on HR8833), which could drive two way 1.5A DC brush motors up to 10V . It has the same footprint as your thumbnail suitable for projects with limited spaces.

Motor Drivers vs. Motor Controllers

A motor driver makes use of a bigger chip or discrete FETS that can manage higher voltages and larger currents than the typical 5V/3.3V from a microcontroller pin. They enable you to operate a significantly larger load using a relatively tiny signal. It's crucial to remember that the type of motor must also be considered when discussing motor drivers and controllers. The simplest motor to control is a brushed DC motor because time and protocol are not necessary, unlike stepper and servo motors both require a particular kind of input to function properly.

What distinguishes a motor driver from a motor controller is a frequent query from those entering the robotics field for the first time. The short version is that a motor controller has all of the logic circuitry built in and can be controlled by a higher-level interface such as a PWM signal, USB, analogue input, etc., whereas a motor driver only handles the power to drive the motors. The logic and digital control must be handled by an external microcontroller or microprocessor.…

Motor Controllers

This section will be a little shorter than the last because adding functionality to an existing motor driver only requires the implementation of an interface for control and the addition of a digital harness to control the driver. The following inputs will be present in one or more motor controllers:

  • PWM
  • Analog signal
  • USB
  • Serial (I2C, SPI, etc…)
  • UART
  • RC (hobby radio)

In other words, the idea behind a motor controller is that you can simply connect your motor and power source, plop the controller into an already-existing project, and communicate with it as easy as the protocol permits. Digital motor controller connectivity even enables feedback data like current measurement and error detection.

The ability to control a motor directly from a USB host, like a computer, is provided by motor controllers that enable USB! Each brand's board will have a separate software/protocol, but it's still quite impressive. Therefore, all that is required to control a motor driver is a device that can communicate with it using the protocols that the controller board supports.

Motor controllers are a more expensive option due to the additional circuitry built into them, but if you only need an add-on style board, then they're ideal.
