Color Sensor TCS3200

Color Sensor TCS3200 - If you want to build a project that senses the color of every item, then you could use this as your primary sensor. This sensor needs 2.7V to 5.5V to operate and can read an almost endless range of visible colors.

This sensor is composed of a TAOS TCS3200 RGB sensor chip and 4 white LEDs to balance out the color within its range. You could integrate this with projects including color matching, sorting by color, reading fruits color.

This sensor is interfaced by connecting it to the digital pin of your Arduino

Working on TCS3200 Color Sensor

The purpose of the TCS3200 chip is to identify the hue of light that strikes it. It features many photodiodes (a matrix of 8x8, so a total of 64 sensors). Four different types of filters are placed over these photodiodes. A RED filter has been placed over sixteen sensors, allowing them to solely measure the red component of incident light. Similar to that, 16 have a GREEN filter, and 16 have a BLUE filter. As you should be aware, three primary colors can be used to separate any visible color. Therefore, each primary color's weight in incident light can be measured using one of these three types of filtered sensors. The remaining 16 sensors have a transparent filter.

The incident radiation's intensity is translated into frequency using the TCS3200. A square wave with a 50% duty cycle is the output waveform. An MCU's timer can be used to calculate a pulse's frequency by measuring the pulse's period. The TCS3200's output is presented in a single line. You may be wondering how we determine the intensity of the RED, GREEN, BLUE, and CLEAR channels. It has two inputs, S2 and S3, which are utilized to choose which sensor's output should be displayed on the outline.

Frequently asked questions about TCS3200 Color Sensor

Q1: What is the color sensor's pin count?

Color filters, a photodiode array, a current-to-frequency converter, and a final square wave output that can be sent straight to a microcontroller make up this device. 8 pins and a SOC packaging make up the TSC3200 Color Sensor IC. The pin-out for the Color Sensor IC may be seen in the image below.

Q2: Work in the dark color sensors?

Because it contains four white, powerful LEDs, it can indeed function in low light. It is great for line following since the color sensor can distinguish between colors or gauge the strength of reflected light. The sensor can determine the color or brightness of the surface even in complete darkness because it emits its light.

Q3: What constitutes a color sensor's major components?

A white light emitter is built into color sensors to illuminate the surface. To measure the wavelengths of the red, green, and blue colors, respectively, three filters with wavelength sensitivities of 580 nm, 540 nm, and 450 nm were used.
